Reflecting — hearing ourselves think — has always been part of health and growth and creativity.

Reflection Partner explores whether AI can be another tool, alongside journaling, reading, talking, etc. for the process of reflection.

Core Functionality

Reflection Partner’s core functionality is a form of chat, where you surface the first step in your reflection process (ex: “Why am I feeling this way?”) and the AI attempts to reflect back what it heard. Then, it’s your turn again, and maybe what the AI reflected back resonated or it doesn’t – but either way you now have something new to work with as a second step in reflection (“I resonated with this part” or “that was wrong”). Back and forth as you go deeper.

Additional Features

ChatGPT and other models remember only a limited window from previous chats. Reflection Partner adds 3 types of long term memory. It also gives prompts to help you start reflecting, and has an “Explore” area with essays on the meaning of reflection.

Why might AI be good as a reflection partner?

AI is built to predict the next word. It is trained on billons of books and discussions. As a result it is uniquely good at reflecting back our most nuanced and deep thoughts (as well as our shallow). A 2025 study in collaboration with OpenAI found that only 2% of chats using ChatGPT are for personal reflection — but those types of chats had the highest satisfaction of all use cases.

Privacy

Reflection Partner respects your privacy. If there’s one thing about reflection, it needs to be private. Data is encrypted in two ways so that only you (and whoever you wish to share them with) will ever see your reflections. See our privacy page for more details.

Safety

AI technology is still emerging, and we are learning about its effects on our well-being. Early research suggests that, in certain circumstances, it can have a strong influence, especially because it responds directly to you and feels interactive. Reflection Partner guides the AI to avoid presenting itself as a person or claiming to feel your emotions, which supports healthy boundaries. Please see our safety page for more details.

Our hope is not to create another voice, but a space — one that helps you put your experiences into words and process emotion.
